From the moment I booked our table on the phone, I had a really good feeling that this was going to be a great dining experience, and my instinct was right.
The Palmichael is in the heart of Burton Latimer. There is limited parking, and whilst we found a space others might struggle on some nights of the week. We had booked a table for 6pm, and we arrived a little early. I originally booked a table for 2, but due to babysitting challenges we took our daughters with us and despite being fully booked from 7pm, which is a great sign for a Tuesday evening, this was no problem for them which was really pleasing as it could have been an issue.

or starters I chose Ndjua Crostini (£4.25), which was a spicy soft salami on ciabatta with mozzarella. The lady that served us, who I imagine is one of the Owners, advised me that this was very spicy. I really appreciated her making me well aware, but I assured her I was happy. It did have a kick! The perfect combination for a spicy starter, not too much, but more than enough, and mozzarella was complemented by the spicy salami, and the pint of Peroni, which is served on draught, helped to wash it down.
My wife chose Mozzarella Corrozza (£6.00), fried mozzarella in bread crumbs, warm tomato sauce with balsamic dressing & pesto sauce. Our daughters were happy with a selection of italian breads, which were served warm, so a really good start to our meal.
It has been a few years since I have been to The Palmichael, and is much better than I imagined it was. As you enter the big solid black door the warmth hits you, and to the right is a waiting area opposite the bar, which would be ideal for my wife and I to perhaps enjoy a drink before our meal had it not been for our daughters joining us. The bar was compact, but what I particularly liked was the local drinks, which included Warner Edwards and Saxbys Cider, to be well stocked along with fresh fruit, for cocktails and gins. The dining room, which seats approximately 50 people, has a cozy feel. I am not sure I would want to have a “date night” if the restaurant was at capacity, but if I was in a party of 4 or 6 then you could certainly spend a few hours in the cozy, warm environment.

sh and meat lovers. All of the steaks are “Hereford” breed & dry-aged for a minimum of 28 days.
One dish that caught my eye was Branzino al Ferri (£16.95), pan fried fillet of line caught sea bass, pea puree, scallop cream sauce, however when I read Micahelaneglo’s Lasagne (£12.95) which is the homemade beef lasagne, tomato sauce & parmesan, my mind was made up and I was not disappointed. I asked for extra parmesan and black pepper and as soon as it arrived you could tell by the portion it was homemade. It was much bigger than I anticipated it would be. If there was one criticism, it was it did not come with any salad, and being a salad dodger myself that might surprise some of you, but I always think salad complements a good lasagne. My wife chose Fettuccine con Gamberoni (£15.00), fettuccine, tiger prawns, spicy chorizo sausage, chilli, cherry tomato sauce with lemon oil. Firstly it looked amazing, and considering my wife asked if I wanted to try some as she approached the end, it was apparent it tasted as good if not better than it looked.
My wife described it as a rich tomato sauce that had a smokey after taste, that she would quite happily eat again and whilst the description was tiger prawns, they could be easily mistaken for king prawns, huge prawns which were cooked to perfection.
There were plenty of dessert options, and had it been the 2 of us I think we could have deliberated over a bottle of wine between a Glazed Sicillian Lemon Tart with raspberry & panna cotta ice-cream (£7.00), Warm Chocolate Brownie with pistachio ice-cream (£6.00) or the one that caught my eye homemade Tiramisu with hazelnut ice-cream (£6.00), however we were both full.
The Palmichael, as far as I am aware has always been a family run restaurant, and it gives locals a taste of Italy, whilst maintaining that family owned and managed feel to a quality restaurant. The staff that we came across were attentive, polite and sincere. The food was superb, and our conversation on the journey home was about dishes we would try next time, which confirms we will definitely be revisiting again.
Our meal, came to £53.65, which included Gujon & Chips for our daughters, although we did not have any wine.
I did look at the wine menu, and wine lovers would be spoilt for choice. On our next visit, which is already booked for the end of this month, we will be dining with friends where we will make our way through the wine list and find room for a dessert.
